A Cemetery in Vienna

Most of those resting here died
of old age or natural causes.
They were buried and mourned for
by members of their families.
and left the world not knowing
what lay ahead
for those they left behind.
Only an occasional grave is cared for.
The others have been left
to crack, crumble, tilt and sink,
embraced by grass, moss and vines.
Those who should have cared for them
were dispersed or perished.
Unlike the cemeteries in the East,
these gravestones are not invariably
carved with Hebrew letters,
shapes and symbols
for the ghetto and the shtetl
was not the way of life
for all of those
who were buried here.
Such gravestones are here as well,
but other graves and mausoleums
are emblazoned with Latin letters
and are built in a variety of styles,
including Gothic and even Moorish.
There had always been prejudice,
but these gravestones bear witness
to a gentle and harmonious life.
For many Judaism was a religion,
but a religion like any other,
not one that meant isolation
from the society they lived in.
There's a section for those
who fell in World War I.
They did not live to see
what was to occur

on the territory they fought for.
Perhaps life as it seemed to be
was just an illusion
but what followed was reality.
Some of the names of women
on those gravestones
are Betty, Babette, Barbara, Jeanette,
Marie, Henriette, Fanny,
Laura, Natalie and Susanne.
My grandmother’s maiden name,
Julie Modern,
sounds like a soubrette in a musical comedy,
but she does not lie here or anywhere.
There's a namesake here
on my father's side of my family,
whose date of death is March 12, 1938,
the day of the annexation.
How did she die that day?
Did others snuff out her life?
Did she die of her own hand?
Or did her death
just happen to fall on that fateful day?
And what happened to those she left behind,
those who buried her?
And here’s a grave that attests
to my grandmother's form of death.
It is a stone under which no one rests.
It was placed here by parents
for their daughter Gisela
who perished in Theresienstadt in 1943.
That was my mother's name too.
When I found that stone
a pheasant flew up.
Did I neglect to say that the sun
was shining on that glorious day?
Only stones lay on some of the gravesites.
Stones may be more appropriate,
but there was a symphony of flowers
growing out of the ground.
Nature does not mourn,
it merely glosses over.
